Confronted with globalization, some local production dynamics, characterized by their ability to compete with global firms, are emerging in some places. They show an adaptation of the local socio-economic Field to the global economic mutations. Following the example of the Silicon Valley, the Grenoble area is rather successful thanks to its capabilities in developing innovative ways of organizing activities within its territory. The shift from microelectronics to micro and nanotechnologies can be considered as a technological break. As a consequence, the socio-economic Field has to reorganize its specific assets and resources in order to adapt to the new industrial activity.

In the Grenoble territory, public research, industry, and local governments are highly linked. The phenomenon is mainly cultural and can be illustrated by the "CIFRE" covenant, that associates a PhD student, a research laboratory and a firm. This thesis aims at analysing the "CIFRE" covenants in terms of proximity dynamics in order to highlight the resources and interrelationships created between the three participants.
